Baba & Kız Atelier is located in Sakarya Mahallesi, one of the oldest and central areas of Ayvalık, on the bottom floor of our Greek house built in 1881, in the old expression ‘under life’.
In 2016, in our house, which we restored in accordance with the original, where the families who came to Ayvalık with the 1924 Cretan exchange lived; I mediate our guests to accumulate unforgettable memories with my tourism education and experience.
My father and I joined hands and brought my atelier to life. We gave the atelier a new identity by using recycling methods as much as possible. In this way, we both preserved the traces of its past and created a sheltered space. Our atelier, which was the result of our joint labour and creativity at every stage, has now turned into a place that tells our story in every detail.
At Baba & Kız Atelier, every product comes to life when paper and cardboard wastes embark on a journey of transformation. Paper and cardboard, which are destined to be thrown into dustbins in homes, workplaces and stores, reach our atelier and start to be re-evaluated. Our aim is to transform waste into an art form that contributes to sustainability before it reaches the garbage trucks.
This creative process proceeds in meticulous and careful steps. In the first stage, we carefully sort the collected paper, soak and soften it. Then, using an industrial blender, we shred it down to the finest fibres and blend each material into a homogenous texture. This resulting mixture is made into dough with carefully formulated proportions.
